New UL 94 V-0 Listed, Medium Density Flame Retardant Foam
Lighter than competitor, excellent thermal conductivity, available in sheets up to 2” thick without laminating
Bellofram Elastomers, a leading manufacturer of closed cell silicone sponge and the original inventor of the Bellofram rolling diaphragm, is enhancing safety in component manufacturing with the introduction of a new UL 94 V-0 listed, flame-retardant closed cell silicone sponge sheet product. Designed to help prevent the spread of fire, this innovative material provides improved protection for various applications.
UL 94 for vertical flames is a plastics flammability standard released by the Underwriters Laboratories (USA), and its designation means the foam product releases water at certain temperatures to extinguish flames. The new flame-retardant Bellofram foam formulation improves upon the leading flame-retardant silicone foam in the market and is ideal for use in component product manufacturing serving diverse markets, including electronic enclosure seals, HVAC seals and gaskets, LED gaskets, electronic vehicle battery seals, and more.
Bellofram Elastomers’ newest foam product 7829 is a medium density closed cell silicone sponge, slightly lighter than the competing brand, with a similar compression set and excellent thermal conductivity, dielectric strength, and compression deflection. Perhaps best of all, Bellofram Elastomers can offer unlaminated sheets up to 2-inches thick and 36-inches wide. The new line becomes part of Bellofram Elastomer’s one-stop-shop, bundled offering, and the company can easily satisfy small and medium quantity orders, filling a gap in the supply chain.
Bellofram 7829 is UL 94 V-0, meaning that, in burn testing, burning stops within 10 seconds.
This proprietary new foam was developed in-house by Bellofram engineers for the perfect balance of lighter weight, compression deflection, thermal conductivity, and dielectric strength. The creation and launch of silicone foam 7829 demonstrates Bellofram’s talent with custom formulations. “I applied years—off and on—developing the right construction, and then the last nine months in earnest, testing and tweaking the formulation,” said Matthew Wingertsahn, vice president, Bellofram Elastomers. “These materials offer long-lasting performance even in extreme conditions, are highly versatile with excellent memory and low stress relaxation, and are suited to a wide range of applications.”
Wingertsahn is a mechanical engineer with more than a decade of experience formulating silicone sponge. “We saw a gap in the market. We went after that gap, not only making a better mouse trap but also making it available in the right order quantities.”
